What is Reynolda Village?

Reynolda Village is part of the original 1,067-acre Reynolda country estate developed from 1912 to 1917 by Richard Joshua Reynolds and his wife, Katharine Smith Reynolds.

These historic buildings have been repurposed as the charming boutiques, restaurants, and experiences of Reynolda Village.  The restored buildings are now home to shops, restaurants, services, offices, and even an elegant wedding and event venue, The Barn at Reynolda Village, in what was once the Dairy Barn on the Reynolda estate.

Is there a fee to visit Reynolda Village?

Visiting Reynolda Village is free and open to the public.

Reynolda Gardens is also free and open to the public. There is an admission fee for Reynolda House Museum of American Art, however, there are many free admission categories and opportunities.

How much time should I plan to spend at Reynolda Village?

We recommend allotting at least two hours to explore Reynolda Village, plus another hour or two for a leisurely lunch or dinner. If you’d like the full experience at Reynolda Village, including the self-guided Reynolda Revealed tour, we’d recommend at least four hours. Do any of the restaurants offer vegan/vegetarian options, gluten-free options, or nut-free options?

Nut-free:

  • Dough-Joe’s Doughnut and Coffee Shop is entirely nut-free. All items in the shop are nut-free, including doughnuts, doughnut toppings, pastries, coffee, syrups, and milks.

Gluten-free:

  • Village Tavern has an entire gluten-free menu.
  • Penny Path Cafe & Crepe Shop offers a gluten-free version of their crepes.

Vegan/Vegetarian:

  • Village Tavern has numerous vegan/vegetarian options on their menu.

Parking is complimentary at Reynolda Village.

Please note that on busy days/times in the Village, you may need to explore several parking areas to find an available spot.  Please be sure to leave additional time to find parking.

Can I walk from Reynolda House Museum of American Art to Reynolda Village?

Reynolda Village is an easy five-minute stroll from Reynolda House. We recommend that you enter through the Reynolda main gate at 2250 Reynolda Road and park in lots A or B near Reynolda House. After your visit to Reynolda House, you can stroll through Reynolda Gardens as you make your way down to Reynolda Village. However, if you cannot or prefer not to walk, there are parking areas throughout Reynolda Village.

Can I walk from Reynolda Gardens to Reynolda Village?

Reynolda Village is adjacent to Reynolda Gardens. We recommend that you enter through the Reynolda main gate at 2250 Reynolda Road and park in lot B, which is closest to Reynolda Gardens. Alternatively, there are parking areas available throughout Reynolda Village.

Are there public restrooms available?

Accessible gender-neutral restrooms are available in building 114, reached via the pathway between buildings 114 and 106. Restrooms are open daily during the hours Theodore’s is open.

Is Reynolda Village wheelchair accessible?

Reynolda Village is committed to providing a welcoming and inclusive experience for all visitors. However, due to the historic nature of our buildings and extensive grounds, visitors may experience some challenges with access. Most of the Village has paved pathways or sidewalks, but there are areas with uneven terrain and inclines.

Accessible parking is located throughout Reynolda Village. Accessible gender-neutral restrooms are available in building 114, reached via the pathway between buildings 114 and 106.

Visitor Policies

We ask that everyone be respectful of our historic buildings, grounds, and landscaping. Children must be closely supervised at all times. Please do not stand or climb on stone walls. Bicycles are only allowed on paved roadways. Skateboards are not permitted.

If you use our picnic tables or outdoor benches or picnic on our grounds, please tidy up before you leave and dispose of trash in the provided receptacles.

Please keep all music at a low volume to prevent disturbing others’ peaceful enjoyment of Reynolda Village.

Annual and Holiday Events

What annual events does Reynolda Village have?

Reynolda Village has two major annual events: the Sidewalk Sale and the Holiday Stroll. Individual shops and restaurants also hold many additional events, trunk shows, and other promotions throughout the year.

What holiday events or decorations does Reynolda Village have?

The annual Reynolda Village Holiday Stroll is held each year on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Explore the Village throughout the holiday season for individual merchant’s specials and promotions and explore the holiday decor inside each of our shops and restaurants. The grounds throughout the Village are simply and tastefully decorated for the holidays, in the style they would have been in Katharine Smith Reynolds’ day.

How much time should I plan to spend if I want to visit the entire Reynolda estate?

You can easily spend an entire day or weekend exploring the Reynolda estate, finding treasures in the unique boutiques and shops of Reynolda Village, discovering the Museum’s renowned American art collection, enjoying the historic bungalow, strolling woodland trails, finding inspiration and beauty in the Formal Gardens, visiting a historic waterfall, and savoring the delicious delights at the restaurants in Reynolda Village. If you plan to spend the weekend at Reynolda, we recommend accommodations at The Graylyn Estate, just across the street from Reynolda.

I’m from out of town. Where can I stay?

We recommend The Graylyn Estate, located adjacent to Reynolda, and offering complimentary transportation to and from. As the country estate of Bowman and Nathalie Gray, Graylyn was the second-largest private home in North Carolina. Graylyn has been named one of the top 25 romantic hotels and voted one of the 10 best boutique hotels in the U.S. Graylyn offers complimentary ice cream all day, and Mrs. Gray’s butterscotch cookies every afternoon.

Are there any Reynolda-related hotel packages?

The Graylyn Estate offers Reynolda-related packages, such as a spa package including Reynolda Village’s European Touch Day Spa, and a Reynolda Experience package.

Use of Reynolda Village property for commercial or for-profit purposes by anyone other than a tenant of Reynolda Village is not permitted.

Any group visit or outing of ten or more people must be requested and approved by Reynolda Village.

Organized sports practices, team events, etc. are not permitted.

History

Are the buildings in Reynolda Village original to the Reynolda Estate?

Reynolda Village is comprised of charming historic buildings that once supported the 1,067-acre estate of the R.J. Reynolds family. Most of the buildings in the Village were built between 1912 and 1917 and are original to the estate.

Katharine Smith Reynolds modeled Reynolda Village after an English village. Many of the buildings were designed by esteemed architect Charles Barton Keen. When the Reynolds family lived on the estate, Reynolda Village included dairy barns, a cattle shed, a smokehouse, a blacksmith shop, a school, a post office, and more.

The policies below are for Reynolda Village. Please note that Reynolda Gardens and Reynolda House Museum of American Art have different photography policies.

Amateur photography is permitted throughout Reynolda Village. We encourage you to tag your photos on social media with #reynoldavillage.

Professional photography is permitted in Reynolda Village if it employs only handheld cameras, does not impede traffic or pedestrian flow, and does not take away from other visitors’ enjoyment of the Village. Props, lighting equipment, tripods, backdrops, etc. are not permitted. Only portrait photography is allowed, and only for individuals or groups of six or fewer (engagement, prom, etc.). Professional photography for commercial, branding, or business purposes is not permitted. Professional photography is permitted only at the discretion of Reynolda Village management.

Commercial photography is not permitted for anyone other than tenants of Reynolda Village, except in rare cases that are requested and approved in advance. Fees apply.

Amateur and commercial drone photography are not permitted.

Can I bring my pet?

Many Reynolda Village restaurants and seating areas offer pet-friendly patios. The grounds and gardens encompass 125 acres of wooded trails, meadows, and wetlands, including seven acres of Formal Gardens. Leashed, well-behaved pets are welcome outside on the Reynolda grounds, except for the Formal Gardens. Visitors are required to clean up after their pets. Service animals with identification are welcome throughout Reynolda.

What time of year is best to visit?

Reynolda Village is beautiful year-round. The landscaping changes throughout the seasons, so there is always something gorgeous to discover.

Are there places to rest/relax?

There are multiple seating areas throughout the Village, including benches, patio tables in the beautiful fountain courtyard (in building 111), and picnic tables.

Can I picnic at Reynolda Village?

Picnics are allowed throughout Reynolda Village, including near the waterfall area. We encourage you to patronize the restaurants of Reynolda Village for your picnic fare. Supporting the businesses of Reynolda Village helps support the care and maintenance of the beautiful buildings and landscaping throughout the Village.

Are there EV charging stations in Reynolda Village?

At this time, there are no EV charging stations in Reynolda Village, but we are working on plans to install some soon. The closest EV charging stations are at SECCA or on the WFU campus. EV charging stations are also available at Graylyn for overnight guests.
